Steve Angello, one third of Swedish House Mafia, took his talented label, Size Matters, to Central Park in NYC for an unforgettable night. Although Rumsey Playfield in Central Park has a ton of restrictions (including a 10pm curfew), Angello was able to make the most out of the outdoor venue. I am usually the one to critique the Rumsey Playfield, but last night Central Park’s Summerstage was more than just a normal concert venue, it was transformed into a nightclub. One thing I probably should mention though is the unorganized bathroom situation, but that could of been easily fixed by having more porta potties available.
With the help of rain and impressive lights for such a small landscape, the crowd of 3,500 last night danced from 5pm till 10pm..and I’m sure many still went to the afterparty at Pacha. Last night it was all about the music. The rain started to really come down as Angello was playing Ingrosso & Tommy Trash’s new single “Reload.” “I ordered this rain,” Angello exclaimed as the distorted bassline from “Reload” dropped. Steve Angello then went on to say, “The funny part about the rain is you know whose here for the party and whose here for the music.”
Steve Angello started his set by playing the beginning of his popular mix “KNAS” and then going immediately into SHM’s hit single “Greyhound.” Luckily enough, Sirius XM radio has a live rip of his full set, but listening to the set as the rain fell in Central Park with lasers being shot at the tall trees surrounding the venue was a whole different experience than just listening below. You had to be at the concert to really understand the energy Steve Angello brought to the park. When Steve Angello played Dada Life’s “Kick Up The Epic Motherf****r”, he dropped “Epic” in place of the second drop and the crowd erupted. Later in the night Angello played “Leave The World Behind” mixed with Nari & Milani’s massive festival hit “Atom.” I remember witnessing Swedish House Mafia premiere “Greyhound”, “Atom” and “In My Mind” all back at MSG months ago. It was great seeing Angello drop these tracks again since the crowd knew just about every beat drop and melody.
Towards the end of the night, Rumsey Playfield was full of smoke from the machines on stage and happiness. Steve Angello ended his set with “Don’t You Worry Child” as expected, but he didn’t just hit play and allow the crowd’s emotions to kick in. He played a “world exclusive” that featured a bass heavy drop. The remix allowed the intimate crowd to erupt just one last time before leaving the park. I’m sure Steve Angello went on to play an amazing set at Pacha after hours too, but I still have to wait a little before I can legally get in…Enjoy the stream of Steve Angello’s set below. And be sure to catch Swedish House Mafia on their Last Tour.
